Subaru Legacy Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to the removal, inspection, and installation of the oil pump assembly on Subaru Legacy?
A: The oil pump can be removed only if the following procedures are performed, draining off the engine oil and detachment of the oil filter. Lift the front of the vehicle with a jack and then align it with the jack stands and secure it top the stands. Then remove the Timing Belt, tensioner, and crankshaft sprocket, then the upper timing belt idler, the 1st pulley, and the second sprocket. For turbocharged models, it is necessary to open the coolant and pull the coolant pipes out of the oil cooler located at the front part of the engine, then to take out the water pump and the radiator. For all models, the crankshaft position sensor and the mounting bolts must be disconnected to detach the oil pump; the periodical change of the oil must be made with a drain pan under the oil to collect the dripping one. For examination, take off the rear cover of the oil pump assembly, then, mark the inner and outer rotors, and pull out the rotors from the pump casing. Take off the relief valve plug, washer, spring and the relief valve, clean all of these parts with solvent and dry and examine the parts for damage. Examine the interior of the pump surface and exterior of the rotors for scoring and damage as well as on the relief valve and spring. Look at the bearing housing for obstructed oil channels, and breaks and harms; in the event that any part is thrashed, supplant the oil pump association. Screw the rotors into the pump housing and check for the rotor tip thickness, outer rotor to oil pump housing, and rotor to cover." Replace the oil pump assembly if the actual clearance is more than the limit. For installation, apply some drops of the clean engine oil on the contact surface of the relief valve and screw it on together with the spring, washer and plug. Before placing the rotors back into the pump housing, ensure the match marks are properly aligned for the rotors prior to lubrication with clean engine oil and the placing of the rotor cover. The oil pump housing-to-engine block O-ring to be replaced while a new crankshaft oil seal will have to be fitted. Use the clean anaerobic sealant and spreading a thin layer around the oil pump sealing surface, fit the pump to the block and tighten the bolts to the required amount of torque. To complete the installation process, you need to reverse the removal process, put fresh engine oil and a new filter and for the turbo models, refill the cooling system. Last of all, turn on the engine and look for adequate oil pressure and for oil leakage.
