    Q:
How to remove and install the latch and cable on Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
To uninstall the latch, one has to locate and then pry off the radiator grille, then mark a line around the latch for easy alignment, then finally undo the latch retaining bolts of the radiator support and finally removing the latch. Following this, raise the hood and reverse the direction of the hood release cable, prior to disconnecting it from the latch assembly. On the cable, it shall be detached from the latch assembly and out fitted with a stiff wire at the end and traced back to the firewall where it shall have all the cable retaining clips popped out. In the passenger compartment, the knee bolster must be detached and the hood release lever must be removed once the driver's side panel lower cover is popped-off while pulling the cable backward. Pull the stiff wire of the new cable through the hole and remove the old cable by disconnected it from the lever of the hood release and pulling it till the rear side of the passenger compartment. Take out the existing grommet boot from the cable opening of the firewall; guarantee that the new cable possesses a new grommet, and join the new cable with the wire. From the engine compartment side of the cable, extract the wire through the hole in the cable; then, from the passenger compartment side, force the grommet back into the hole in the firewall until it is properly seated.

    Q:
How to remove and install a hood release cable and Hood Latch on Subaru Outback? Posted by Customer
    A:
On 2008 and later models, remove the front bumper cover. Scribe a line around the latch to aid alignment when installing. Detach the latch retaining bolts from the radiator support and remove the latch. Note the routing of the hood release cable, then disengage the cable from the latch assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal. Disconnect the hood release cable from the latch assembly as described above. Attach a piece of stiff wire to the end of the cable. Trace the cable back to the firewall and detach all cable retaining clips. On earlier models, remove the knee bolster. Remove the hood release lever retaining screws. Disengage the cable from the hood release lever. Pull the old cable into the passenger compartment until you can see the stiff wire that you attached to the cable. A grommet insulates the cable hole in the firewall from the elements. The new cable should have a new grommet, so you can remove and discard the old cable grommet. Make sure the new grommet is already on the new cable, then detach the old cable from the wire and attach the new cable to the wire. Working from the engine compartment side of the firewall, pull the wire through the cable hole in the firewall. Installation is otherwise the reverse of the removal. Working in the passenger compartment, push the grommet into place with your fingers. Make sure it's fully seated in the hole in the firewall.
