    Q:
How to remove and install the front hub and bearing assembly on Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
For 2005 and later Legacy models, begin by applying the parking brake, loosening the wheel lug nuts and the driveaxle/hub nut, then raising the front of the vehicle and securely supporting it on jackstands before removing the wheel. Next, take off the brake caliper and brake disc, and remove the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle. Proceed to remove the hub mounting bolts from the back of the steering knuckle, then take off the driveaxle/hub nut and push the driveaxle through the hub splines as the hub and bearing assembly is removed; if the driveaxle is stuck, a puller may be necessary. Exercise caution to avoid overextending the inner CV joint, and support the outer end of the driveaxle with wire or rope once the hub is removed. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, ensuring to tighten the hub mounting bolts, brake caliper mounting bracket bolts, caliper mounting bolts, wheel speed sensor bolt, driveaxle/hub nut, and wheel lug nuts to the specified torque. For all other models, due to the special tools and expertise needed to press the hub and bearing from the steering knuckle, it is advisable to leave this task to a professional mechanic; however, the steering knuckle and hub can be removed as an assembly and taken to an automotive machine shop or qualified repair facility for service.
