On manual transaxle models, begin by removing the shift lever knob. For Legacy and Outback models from 2004 and earlier, take off the center console front trim cover using a trim stick, then remove the console cover and tray by unscrewing the mounting fasteners. Next, take out the remaining center console fasteners and remove the center console itself, with installation being the reverse of removal. Proceed to remove the center console box, then use a trim stick to carefully pry up the trim piece around the shift lever and detach it from the console. Remove the knee bolster and the glove box lower cover, followed by the center console side panels by unclipping them and removing the front clip and six mounting fasteners. Remove the radio and the center console, with installation again being the reverse of removal. For Forester models from 2002 and earlier, start by removing the console cover and the shift lever boot, then take out the console retaining screws. Unplug any electrical connectors before removing the center console, with installation being the reverse of removal. For models from 2003 and later, use a trim stick to pry up the trim piece around the shift lever, remove the console cover by taking out the fasteners, and then remove the remaining center console fasteners. Detach the console side panels and remove the center console, with installation being the reverse of removal.

Remove the center console front trim cover fasteners from the upper corners, then pry up the cover and disconnect the electrical connectors.
