Subaru Forester Intake Valve Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How are valve clearances checked and adjusted on Subaru Forester?
A: The Valve clearances are set while the engine is cold. First loosen and take off the air filter housing, resonator, battery, and battery tray. Then you remove the valve covers. For the models that are not turbocharged, you can take off the timing belt cover which you can locate at the left side Cylinder Head so as to see the timing mark situated on the left side of the sprocket in valve adjustment. With the help of the timing mark on the Camshaft sprocket, align no.1 piston to be at TDC and using feeler gauge of the specific thickness to measure the clearance of both, the intake as well as the exhaust valve of no.1 cylinder. If the clearance is not correct, reduce it by unscrewing the lock nut and then rotating the fine adjuster until slight friction is felt when a feeler gauge is placed on the spur gear. After that release the pressure applied against the adjusting screw and keep it in its place with the help of a screw driver and then tight the lock nut for the second time and again measure the clearance. Continue to examine the valves in the other cylinders starting with the cylinder 3 then cylinder 2 then cylinder 4, each cylinder is brought to TDC by rotating the crankshaft by 1800 degrees clockwise. Check TDC in a way that the arrow on the camshaft sprocket is aligned so that in each of the adjusting positions, the valves are closed. Carry out the adjustment till all the valves are set to the required standard. Place back the valve covers with new gasket, then put back the spark plugs leads and various hoses and vac lines. Start the engine and look at the engine around for oil dripping between the valve covers and cylinder heads. Loosen the timing belt cover bolt on the right side camshaft assembly that will expose the timing belt sprocket; rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the arrow mark on the camshaft sprocket reaches the position of 2:30as in the spec'ed position: the number 1 intake valve and the number 3 exhaust valve clearance should be checked. It is important that any measurements that have been identified to be off the adjusted specification be noted for a later use when calculating the required replacement lifters. Continue rotating the crankshaft to the 4:30, 7:30, and 10:30 locations for number 2 exhaust with I NI, number 2 intake with I NE, and number 1 exhaust with I NE respectively. If, after setting all the valve clearances you find that any valve is out of specification, set the lifters of the valves by removing one or more camshaft(s) from the cylinder head(s). Take actual measurements of the thickness of the subject lifter with the help of a micrometer, and then, ascertain the proper thickness of a new lifter by applying the mentioned formulas. Choose or try to find a lifter that has a thickness as close to the calculated thickness as possible, talk to the dealer or any automotive parts store with qualified personnel. Take off the camshafts on the out of adjustment valves and perform the same on all the valves until all of them can be described in the above manner. After that, secure the spark plugs, and the valve cover, and then reconnect the spark plug wires and put the boots on.
